William was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, on the 14th January 1893. He enlisted at Valcartier Camp, Quebec, 27th September 1914, stating his occupation as a rancher, and his next of kin as Mrs. Oliver, of Greenwood, British Columbia.
He was five feet ten inches in height, had a fair complexion, grey eyes and light hair, and belonged to the Church of England. He had a vaccination mark on his left arm, an old bullet wound on his right leg and a scar on his left instep.
